What Is a Betting Exchange and How Does It Work
In a betting exchange, you bet against other players, not against a bookmaker. There are two types of bets: Back and Lay.
| Back | Lay |
|---|---|
| You think the team will win — bet on that side | You think the team will lose — bet on that side |
| Works like traditional betting | You yourself play the role of the bookmaker |
| Risk: the amount of your bet | Risk: the amount of the potential payout |
Example (in ৳)
In a Bangladesh vs India match, Bangladesh's back odds are 2.5. You backed ৳1,000. If Bangladesh wins, you receive ৳2,500 (profit ৳1,500). If they lose, your ৳1,000 is gone. If you lay, you act as the bookmaker — you pay out if Bangladesh wins, and you receive if they lose.
The exchange platform deducts a small commission from each winning bet — the specific percentage is displayed in each market.
Exchange odds are generally better than those of a regular sportsbook because they come from the market — there is no bookmaker margin.
